Why Are These Streets So Narrow?  Walkability!

You may have noticed a trend in newer neighborhoods lately.  When there are cars parked along a 2-way street, and you are driving, there doesn’t seem to be enough room for a car to pass by coming from the other direction.  In fact, if you do encounter another car, one of you may need to stop to let the other pass before you continue…

What’s the deal?

Believe it or not, this is on purpose.  It forces the traffic to slow down, thereby putting the focus back on pedestrians and cyclists.

This feature is referred to as “walkability”, and it is becoming a more and more desirable feature for home buyers.  From “Milennials” to “Boomers”, people want to live in areas where they can walk to shops, restaurants and cafes.  They want to walk out their front door and be a part of the action.

This is meant to make the area more economically vibrant and it seems to be working.  Areas with higher walk scores are getting the highest prices.

Fancy that!  There is even a cool website that scores cities and neighborhoods based on their walkability.

What’s your area’s walkability?
